Employee Spotlight – Jeni Healy

Welcome to the Employee Spotlight

Welcome to another edition of the Mahoney ‘Employee Spotlight’.  This spotlight is our way to reflect on and draw positive attention to the most important assets of Mahoney – its employees! A functioning business cannot function without a solid team in place, and we are extra proud of that team.

Every couple of weeks, an employee will be nominated and featured.  Next up is Jeni Healy.

What is your role at the company? How long have you been with Mahoney, and what position did you start at?

J: I manage the equipment company (MES). I have been with Mahoney for 4 years and started as an Administrative Assistant for MES. 

How do you balance your career at Mahoney with family life?

J: I don’t.

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Mahoney, whose job would you want?

J: I love my job, but I also love graphic design and marketing, which was my background before coming here. 

What do you like most about Mahoney?

J: All the different personalities and facets of the business. It takes all kinds of kinds.

What is on your wish list for the next five years at ME?

J: Bar codes on all warehouse parts, automated work flow through technology and watching my team grow into mentoring their own team. 

What has been your favorite project that you worked on here at Mahoney?

J: Leading MES with open communication and the understanding we’re ALL on Team Mahoney.  Creating a positive culture/perception…I love it!

What drew you to Mahoney when you initially started and how has the company changed since then?

J: I was initially drawn by the commute time.  As for the change, the growth! The company has expanded their NE and SW footprint and we continue to grow. 

Before working at Mahoney, what was the most interesting or unusual job you had?

J: Wow, that’s a great question.  I worked at a matchbook factory as a graphic designer; in the late 90’s art was not digitized like it is now and I had to recreate a lot of low quality resolution artwork. We printed “plates” for 4 color process printing, then separate each color for the printing process.  I learned so much; one of my favorite jobs. 

Share your proudest moment since coming on board at Mahoney?

J: Hands down seeing my team grow, laugh, work together, trust each other and succeed! Winning James D. Mahoney Employee Excellence Award was also a proud moment. 

Miscellaneous Questions (non-job related)

Do you have an office nickname?

J: Boss Lady or Jen-eye (I like to think of it like Jedi with an “N”…see what I did there?).

Do you have a favorite or inspirational quote to share?

J: My dad has said this to me throughout my life and they’re words I live by: “If you’re not happy, get away from it”. 

Best vacation you have been on?

J: In 2012, instead of going on a traditional vacation, I took an adventure year. I went skydiving, began competing in triathlons, cross-fit and distance racing.  That year I ran 3 half marathons and the Chicago Marathon for Ronald McDonald House Charities.  Much more expensive and not at all relaxing. 

If you could change careers right now, what would you choose:

J: Hobby Farmer – I belong in a farm stand selling strawberries and eggs. 

If you could interview one person in the world (dead or alive), who would it be and why?

J: My Aunt Virginia. She was a WWII veteran, rode a Harley, and bought a home as a single woman in the 60’s. She would have some great stories!

Choose your Mr. Men/Little Miss, to describe your work personality? Your home life personality?

J:  No difference, what you see is what you get…always.  “Little Miss get it done” 

Motto or personal mantra?

J:  “I do what I want”. I’ve learned if you want anything in life you have to REALLY WANT it.  Plan your focus and focus your plan. Trust your intentions, the process and the universe.  

If you were stuck on an island, what three things would you bring (assuming basics are provided for you)?

J: Snorkeling gear, sunglasses and tequila.

People would be surprised if they knew what about you?

J: Two things. My birth name is Jeni, not Jen or Jennifer. From the age of 7, I flew alone from Miami, FL to San Antonio, TX several times a year (divorced parents).  I learned a lot about people from a very early age.  Best lesson on independence a kid could get.  

Finally….three words that best describe you:

J: Competitive, funny and genuine.
