Sustainability in Used Cooking Oil
Cooking oil plays a vital role in the daily operations of many restaurants, highlighting the need for safe and responsible management of used cooking oil (UCO). It’s crucial for commercial kitchens to set up proper processes and have the necessary infrastructure for collecting and storing UCO, making recycling easier. Working with an experienced UCO recycler like Mahoney Environmental promotes sustainability and ensures that the collected oil is reused to make renewable fuels at specialized recycling facilities. By relying on Mahoney Environmental for UCO pickup and recycling, you not only cut frying costs but also actively support eco-friendly UCO recycling practices while boosting workplace safety.
Our Used Cooking Oil Recycling Process
When you work with Mahoney Environmental, you can expect regular UCO pickups from our trained professionals using the best equipment available to safely load and transport the oil. After we collect the UCO from your restaurant, it goes through the following process:
- Incoming UCO is screened to remove contaminants and then heated to remove fine particles. The UCO is then put into our heated settling tanks to separate the water and emulsion from the fryer oil.
- The emulsion is put through an evaporator to remove remaining water that will be put through wastewater treatment. This treatment converts organic compounds into carbon dioxide and methane through anaerobic respiration and the water is used for organic fertilizer.
- The remaining oils and solids are separated in a centrifuge.
- Finished oil is tested for quality control and screened for any unwanted particles. The oil product is then shipped to our customers with traceability for all materials we sell.
- Nearly 100% of the UCO we collect and recycle is sold as a feedstock for renewable fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel.
Sustainable UCO Recycling
UCO recycling promotes sustainability as repurposing used cooking oil for feedstock and renewable energy decreases demand for depleting energy sources. Mahoney Environmental helps increase the value and usefulness of used cooking oil while protecting the natural environment in the following ways:
Diverting carbon and nitrogen
The UCO recycling process keeps these materials from affecting groundwater, surface water, and soil.
Repurposing carbon and nitrogen
These materials are repurposed into useful products which reduce the production of greenhouse gases.
Providing a safer alternative
UCO recycling is a safer, more efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to landfills, incineration, and composting.
