Our Grease Theft Rewards Program and Theft Prevention Team recently supported four incidents across three states that led to nine arrests in under a month. We’ve been recycling used cooking oil for food service operators since 1953, and protecting that oil once it’s in our containers is part of the service. The announcement was published on PR Newswire.
In every one of these cases, a customer or neighbor noticed something wrong and acted quickly:
- In Cranston, Rhode Island, on September 11, police made two arrests after locating a suspect vehicle at PJ’s Pub, where about 100 gallons of UCO had been taken, and our Sales and Theft Prevention teams collaborated on the case.
- In Plymouth, Indiana, on September 17, a King Gyros owner spotted a truck stealing UCO on camera and called dispatch, and police arrested two men when the truck returned.
- In Evansville, Indiana, on September 29, officers responded to a theft in progress and found roughly 300 gallons of UCO in the suspects’ van, and two men were charged.
- In Beverly, Massachusetts, on October 10, a neighbor alerted a business owner who watched surveillance footage and called police, leading to three arrests.
UCO theft costs restaurants and recyclers millions of dollars each year, and thieves can empty a container in minutes. Quick reporting is what makes the difference.
“Restaurant owners have enough to worry about without wondering if their oil is safe overnight. That’s why every Mahoney customer is eligible for a reward when their tip leads to an arrest and/or conviction. We want customers to know that speaking up is worth it, and that we have their backs,” said Beau Mega, SVP of Sales and Marketing, Mahoney Environmental.
Our dedicated Theft Prevention Team works closely with law enforcement and customers to identify and prosecute UCO thieves. All customers are eligible for cash rewards, which vary between misdemeanor and felony convictions and are granted per vehicle. All individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
