In 2019, we started collecting used cooking oil from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Flash forward three years, and now that oil is refined into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to fuel planes. Over 200 restaurants in the airport in five terminals work with us to dispose of their used cooking oil.
This program started because DFW set a goal to reach net zero emissions by 2030, and recycling cooking oil is part of that plan. DFW partners with Neste, a company that specializes in renewable fuels, to convert the used cooking oil into SAF. SAF can reduce emissions by about 80% compared to burning fossil fuels in-flight.
The process of collecting and recycling used cooking oil and then fueling planes with SAF created from the used cooking oil is called a circular economy. Watch the video below to learn the whole story.
